Assistant Manager Vacancy at The Old Cannon Brewery

A renowned independent Pub, Restaurant, Brewery and B&B in the Georgian quarter of Bury St Edmunds are looking to recruit an Assistant Manager (or Management couple) to work alongside the owners to help run this successful, complex, quirky business.

The Old Cannon Brewery is a 45 cover restaurant, 7 room B&B and 7 Barrel brewery.  The current leaseholders have been running the business for the last 5 years, building its reputation as a great local’s bar; a go-to place to eat offering dishes made with locally sourced fresh ingredients; and quirky B&B with rooms named after our beers, and free beer!  Our brewery has gone from strength to strength.  We deliver to a vast range of pubs across East Anglia, as well as producing two unique brews for local independent pub restaurants.

About you
We are looking for an outgoing, positive and hard-working Assistant Manager.  You’ll have a passion for the hospitality industry, wanting to deliver excellent service to customers; and excellent management support to our Front of House Team.

  • Ability to ‘read and recognise’ what our customers want/need/require and deliver it to them. This to us is what Customer Service is all about.  A smile and polite manner are a given!
  • A ‘want to’ work ethic – a natural do-er and problem solver, someone that does what needs doing and doesn’t compromise for an easy life.
  • A leader by example –an excellent communicator, and a consistent role model for our Front of House team.
  • Ambition to succeed – we want someone who passionate about the industry and keen to pursue a career in Pub/Restaurant Management; in return we’ll teach you everything we know and give you as much experience, guidance and advice as possible.

  • At least 2-3 years of working in a busy bar/restaurant on a full time basis.
  • Experience of using EPOS and online hotel booking systems.
  • Experience of supervising or managing people; or performing in a senior Front of House role.

The offer

  • £16, 500 to £18, 500 per annum depending upon experience, plus tips.
  • Opportunity to learn and progress to becoming a manager.
  • Live in accommodation is available locally (requirement to drive) if successful candidate is relocating to the area.
  • Pension scheme with employer contributions.
  • Private health care cover.
  • 25% staff discount.
  • Branded uniform.

  • References will be required.
  • Please only apply if you have the relevant experience and desire to carry out this role.
  • If your CV doesn’t reflect the experience and attitude we are looking for then it’s unlikely that we will respond to you – if you haven’t’ heard back from us in a couple of weeks than you have been unsuccessful.
  • If you’d like to have a chat about the role, our business, or us then please do give Hannah Clark a call on 01284 768769.

To apply, please email your CV to

Bring some festive cheer to the season with the Old Cannon Brewery’s winter menu

We are kicking off the festive food season with our new winter menu.

We have classics such as the Gunner’s Daughter sausage and colcannon mash as well as Christmas themed dishes to get you in the festive mood.

Serving up comfort food made with locally sourced ingredients and made with beer brewed on-site in our micro-brewery, we invite you to come and enjoy our December lunch and evening menu with winter warming dishes such as Turkey Supreme with a pork, sage and cranberry stuffing; Home cured gravadlax and Old Cannon smoked stilton, walnut and pear salad.

For when the weather gets colder, there is a seasonal Winter vegetable broth and Slow roasted belly of pork to enjoy in the warmth.

For dessert, we offer a range of festive treats such as the traditional Christmas pudding with custard or brandy butter, to a Malt and white chocolate cheesecake and a Fresh cream meringue nest with a satsuma and pomegranate compote.

We also cater to those with special dietary requirements, with a number of items on the menu being gluten free; the Grilled fillet of sea bass and the Chocolate and hazelnut polenta cake served with warm chocolate sauce.

Dani, who works in the kitchen at the Old Cannon comments: “It’s a proper hearty winter menu. The Fusilli pasta has a lovely creamy texture due to the goat’s cheese and it’s great for vegetarians. The Chocolate and hazelnut polenta cake tastes just like chocolate cake, it’s still moist despite being gluten free as some gluten free cakes can be quite dry.”

“The Malt and white chocolate cheesecake melts in your mouth and it’s just what you need on a cold winters day. I love that we have the Turkey Supreme on the menu along with the Christmas pudding because it’s just like eating a Christmas dinner, which is good for Christmas parties.”

Dani adds, “The menu is really quite balanced and suits everyone, from vegetarian to gluten free, to meat eaters and is still filled with all the classics like the Gunners Daughter sausages and mash.”

Daily specials available at the fireplace.

Food is served at the Old Cannon between 12 noon and 9pm on Monday – Saturday. On Sundays lunch runs form 12 noon until 3pm.

The Brewery also offers breakfast, which runs from 7.30am to 12noon Monday – Friday and 8.30am to 12 noon Saturday and Sunday.

Women raise a pint to Cask Ale Week at The Old Cannon Brewery

At the bar

Here at The Old Cannon Brewery we  are encouraging women to get together and enjoy a pint of ale or beer in celebration of Cask Ale Week.  We’ve put on a selection of beers that are ideal for female drinkers to try during the Cask Ale Week, which runs from 24th September to 4th October.

The ‘week’ (10 days) is a celebration of Britain’s National Drink and brings together people from all walks of life who have the shared passion of drinking great beer.  We’ll be circulating various beers throughout the week, including very traditional beers such as Theakstons, Courage and Deuchars, and are keen to get women trying something new.

Hannah Clark, who runs the brewery with husband Garry, commented: “Our mission is to get more women drinking beer and encouraging their friends to do the same. Long gone are the days when holding a pint wasn’t seen as very ladylike!”

“We have a lot of female regulars and we think it’s really important to get more women enjoying beer and ale. Cask Ale Week is a great time to get the ladies coming in here to try something new!  The beers we’ve chosen are ideal for females and for those who are new to ale and beer.”!

There will also be the traditional Old Cannon favourites on bar all week, such as Gunners Daughter and Best Bitter along with the Adnams Spindrift.  The Adnams Spindrift is a great specialty lager that provides an alternative for lager drinkers who like the traditional flavours of beer.

We are also running a Twitter competition to win 3 bottles of beer, which you can find out more about by visiting @theoldcannon
