Testimonials

"A lovely base for our weekend tour.  All 9 of us enjoyed our stay" - The Scratchers & Codgers Motor Cycle Club

"We have visited lots of B&Bs all over the country, and this place has been our very favourite.  Great room (so clean and comfortable!), fantastic food, excellent service, friendly, helpful... I could go on and on.  Really loved our visit.  Love and blessings to you all" - Mrs & Mrs H, Canterbury

"Great meal & good service.  Many thanks" - Harrison & Harrison, Organ Builders to the Cathedral

"Thanks so much for looking after us so well.  Great beer and great accommodation and the Thai feast was indeed a feast!" - Mr & Mrs D, Wimbledon

"An independent freehouse-brasserie-B&B in the centre of our cathedral town, Old Cannon is perhaps the only brew pub in the county where you can see the brewing whilst you sit there supping the results.  Gunner’s Daughter is made with East Anglian malted barley, their special house yeast and carefully chosen hops to give its distinctive character, a balance of strength (at 5.5% abv) and complexity, so good it goes into their chutney and sausages too!" - 60 Great Tastes of Suffolk, Suffolk Magazine, March 2010

"I saw the venue featured on Local Secrets when planning a trip to the Bury Christmas Markets and it sounded like a good place to drop in for lunch.  Arriving at 1.30 on a Saturday lunchtime turned out to be a real test of the facilities - it was packed!  With only 30 minutes before lunch finished there were no tables, so clutching our drinks, the four of us stood watching hopefully for a vacant table.  At last, after what seemed an eternity (less than 10 mins) we were seated and lunch, previously selected from the blackboard, was ordered at the busy bar.  The girls both chose the beer battered cod, Dave fancied the liver and bacon and I plumped for the slow roast belly pork, a particular favourite of mine.  The food was served in an attractive manner within 15 mins and we were not disappointed.  All of us enjoyed the food and also the home-brewed ale that went with it so well.  All-in-all, a memorable experience, with great service from staff under pressure.  We'll certainly be back, but next time in mid-week, to enjoy the venue in slower time" - Geoff, 30 November 2009

Ten Top UK Brew Pubs
Despite fears for the future of the UK pub culture, independent microbreweries are one industry success story, with over 500 nationwide... "At the Old Cannon the stainless steel brewing vessels stand right beside the bar, so you could literally watch the beer being made in front of you.  As well as serving four or five of their home brews, like Old Cannon Best Bitter (3.8%) or Gunner's Daughter (5.5%) they guest Suffolk's famous local Adnam's bitter, Suffolk Aspall cyder and Calvors, a local lager from Coddenham.  You can fill up with up to 36 pints of your favourite Cannon ale and take it home for later.  Their food is very tempting too – you could call the Cannon a bit of a gastro pub – try locally made scotch eggs, Gunner's Daughter sausages, beer battered fish or beef and ale pie (notice the beer themed recipes there)" - Georgia Brown, The Guardian, 25 November 2009

"I like this pub.  It’s different in so many ways. Always a pleasant experience" - Ronald, 26 October 2009

"Recently refurbished in period colours, the eating area also has a blazing fire, on the mantelpiece of which is a candlestick so large one can imagine it being wielded by Colonel Mustard in the Library in a game of Cluedo" - Local Secrets, October 2008
